On this page, you’ll find answers to all your questions about lip fillers, from how they work to how long results last and more.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are injectable dermal fillers typically made of hyaluronic acid (HA). This synthetic version of a substance found naturally in the body attracts and holds water for hydration and volume. We inject the filler just beneath the skin, where it provides volume for several months and harmlessly dissolves over time.

Lip fillers can enhance your lips in multiple ways, including:

  • Smoothing away vertical lines
  • Defining the vermilion border
  • Augmenting your lip volume and plumpness
  • Restoring volume lost due to aging

Many people choose to combine their fillers with a BOTOX® Cosmetic “lip flip,” which helps the top lip turn subtly outward and prevents it from disappearing when you smile.

Your lip shape, face shape, and bone structure are unique, and your treatment plan should reflect that. What Is It Like To Get Lip Filler Injections?

Your treatment begins with an in-depth consultation about your goals and the best way to achieve them. After determining your custom treatment plan, your injector administers a few injections in and around your lips to carefully place your selected filler. The process typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Are Lip Injections Painful?

Your comfort is our priority. In addition to the topical numbing creams we apply, many fillers contain a numbing agent called lidocaine to minimize discomfort further.

What Is Lip Filler Recovery Like?

For the most part, you can return to work, school, and your usual activities right away. Expect to have some swelling and bruising for 1 to 2 weeks. You can wear makeup as soon as your injection sites have healed, which only takes a day or so.

If you have any lingering soreness, you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol®) to ease it. We also recommend taking Arnica montana, a homeopathic supplement that expedites healing.

How Long Do Lip Filler Results Last?

Results typically last between 6 and 12 months, depending on the product. Your fillers will gradually dissolve over time; however, you can maintain your look with touch-up treatments once or twice a year.

Lip Fillers FAQ

Should I massage my lips following my filler appointment?

You will need to give the filler time to settle into place, so avoid massaging, touching, or puckering your lips for the first 24 hours or as instructed by your provider. Massaging may spread the filler unevenly or cause unintended swelling.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t get lip fillers?

Lip fillers are not advisable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or cold sore near your lips, or have certain autoimmune conditions. If you are unsure, one of our providers will determine if you’re a good candidate during a consultation.

Which is better, lip fillers or a BOTOX® lip flip?

These injectable lip enhancement treatments work differently, so the “best” one depends on your desired look. Lip fillers add volume and definition to the top and/or bottom lip, while a BOTOX lip flip uses tiny injections of BOTOX to relax the muscles around the top lip, creating a subtle lift. Many people benefit from both of these treatments.

Can you feel lip fillers when kissing?

Once the swelling subsides and the filler settles, it’s unlikely you or your partner will feel the fillers when kissing. Our HA fillers are formulated to keep the lips feeling soft and natural.

Will people notice that I have lip fillers?

When injected by our experienced providers, lip fillers maintain facial harmony and look very natural. People may notice that your lips look fuller or more defined but not overly done or artificial.
