Halo laser skin resurfacing has become a go-to treatment for minimizing sun damage, smoothing away texture concerns, and brightening the complexion overall. Like many laser therapies, however, it’s not always a one-and-done solution—especially if you have advanced signs of aging.

In this blog post, we’ll answer a few common questions about how many Halo treatments it takes to see results, what to expect during and after the treatment, and when to schedule your sessions for the best experience.

What Is Halo Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Halo is a hybrid fractional laser that uses dual wavelengths to target both the surface and the deeper layers of the skin. It combines ablative wavelengths, which remove the top layer of skin, with non-ablative wavelengths, which heat the deeper tissues without harming the surface.

Together, they stimulate your body’s natural healing response of increased collagen and elastin production, giving your skin a smoother, tauter, younger-looking appearance. Combining both wavelengths lets you enjoy the results of more aggressive treatment with less downtime.

What Does Halo Treat?

Halo is an excellent option for anyone looking to treat:

  • Large pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Scars
  • Dullness
  • Rough texture
  • Uneven tone

We often recommend combining Halo with BBL™ photofacials to address dark areas and redness. Learn more about how each of these treatments works and what they can do for your skin in this blog post.

How Many Halo Laser Treatments Do I Need?

Many people are happy with their results after a single session. However, if you have more advanced signs of aging, you may need 2 or 3 sessions to address your concerns fully. We customize each treatment plan to the individual, and we’ll have an in-depth discussion with you about how many sessions you may need during your initial consultation.

What To Expect From a Halo Treatment

Halo treatments take about 90 minutes, including pre- and post-treatment steps. Your provider will start by applying a topical numbing cream before passing the device over your skin and allowing the laser energy to penetrate your targeted areas.

Are Halo Treatments Painful?

The topical numbing cream dramatically takes the edge off your discomfort. Between our excellent topical numbing and optional NitroNox™ analgesia, most patients experience only mild discomfort and warmness. The device also includes an integrated cooling system that blows cool air on your skin throughout the treatment to keep you comfortable.

What Is the Recovery Process Like After a Halo Treatment?

For milder treatments, you’ll likely have a few days of redness, swelling, and sensitivity, similar to a sunburn. In most cases, you can wear light makeup after day 2 to disguise any lingering redness.

For more aggressive treatments, however, it’s best to plan for a few days away from social obligations. You may have some bronzing and a sandpaper-like texture as tiny wounds from the treatment, called microscopic epidermal necrotic debris (MENDs), appear and eventually heal. As tempting as it may be, you’ll need to resist the urge to pick at these. It may lead to scarring, pigmentation issues, and compromised results.

Results typically begin to appear within a week or 2 and continue to improve for several more weeks.

How Long Should I Wait Between Halo Treatments?

We recommend spacing your treatments 3 to 4 weeks apart. This gives your skin plenty of time to heal completely before your next session.

Will I Need Maintenance Treatments?

Once you’ve achieved your desired results, you can generally enjoy them for months and even years. However, Halo doesn’t stop the aging process altogether. You may need a maintenance treatment if and when you notice signs of aging reappearing. Some people schedule 1 or 2 treatments a year to maintain their “Halo glow.”

The proper at-home skincare regimen can make all the difference in how long your results last between treatments. Your provider will recommend products that can help preserve your new healthier-looking skin.

What Is the Best Time of Year To Get a Halo Laser Treatment?

Many people choose the fall or winter months, when it’s easier to avoid sun exposure. Halo, like most laser treatments, increases your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays in the weeks following your treatment. Scheduling in the winter makes it easier to avoid the sun, thanks to fewer hours of sunlight and more rainy days.

You can have laser treatments in the summer, but you’ll need to be extra diligent about wearing SPF 30 or higher. Covering up with a wide-brimmed hat and staying indoors or in the shade whenever possible is a must.
